Principal update: October 2017

Dear TJMS Parents/Guardians:

It has been a busy, but very good beginning to the new school year. I want to thank everyone for attending Curriculum Night on September 19th.

As we begin the year and start to settle in, we have implemented WIN-WIN (What I Need, When It’s Needed). This program is designed to provide more time and support for students to have access to their teachers for interventions and/or extension activities AND is part of our academic program. We have been very intentional about this time being dedicated to academics. Students who are stamped, or ask to be stamped by a teacher, must attend the 25 minute sessions with that teacher. If a student is not stamped, they may attend Study Hall. We also have priority days, in case students are assigned to multiple teachers. As a staff, we are excited about this time that we have for intervening with students or providing extensions. WIN-WIN will not take away from the daily lessons and allows teachers to move along with curriculum and follow pacing guides. It is very important that students have their planners every day for this system to work. You can help by ensuring your student brings their planner to school each day. Please ask to look at their planners to see what they have been doing during WIN-WIN and/or their classes.

Fall conferences are on the horizon and we will be running what is called “Arena Style Conferences.” There is no need to schedule a conference. You show up when it is convenient for you and meet with teachers individually. There may be a short line, but the wait time should pass quickly.

Conferences are scheduled for:

Thursday, October 19th from 4:00 – 7:30 PM

Friday, October 20th from 8:00 – 11:30 AM

At the end of the year we have an 8th Grade Awards/Recognition assembly. Currently, it is scheduled for the last day of school on Friday, June 15, 2018 at 9:10 AM. This assembly is a great way to honor the accomplishments of our 8th graders, and parents/guardians are encouraged to attend. Following the assembly is the 8th grade party, which is scheduled during the last two hours of the school day.

I look forward to seeing you at fall conferences on Thursday, October 19, or Friday, October 20, 2017.

Thank you,

Tom Adams
